Campaign Overview

As children prepared to return to school in Fall 2020 during the ongoing pandemic, many families faced dual challenges: ensuring their children were healthy and safe, while also lacking resources for basic school supplies and healthcare. The Health Initiative launched our Back-to-School program to address both needs.

Services Provided

  • Free Health Screenings: Comprehensive well-child checkups, vision and hearing tests, height/weight measurements
  • Immunizations: Required school vaccinations, flu shots, catch-up immunizations for missed appointments
  • COVID-19 Education: Family education on staying safe at school, masks provided, hand hygiene kits
  • School Supplies: Backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, crayons, calculators, and other essentials
  • Vision Care: Free vision screenings, eyeglasses for children who needed them
  • Dental Screenings: Oral health checks, toothbrush kits, referrals for needed dental care

Who We Served

Children from low-income families without health insurance, families impacted by pandemic job losses, immigrant families, and students attending underfunded schools in underserved communities.

Campaign Impact

  • 1,200+ children received health screenings
  • 850+ immunizations administered
  • 400+ vision screenings conducted, 85 eyeglasses provided
  • 1,200+ backpacks with school supplies distributed
  • 300+ families received COVID-19 safety kits

Community Partners

We partnered with local schools, community centers, churches, and the health department to reach families where they were. Volunteer nurses, physicians, and optometrists donated their time to make these screenings possible.

How Funds Were Used

  • 35% – Immunizations and medical supplies
  • 30% – School supplies and backpacks
  • 20% – Vision and dental screening equipment
  • 10% – COVID-19 safety kits and education materials
  • 5% – Coordination and volunteer support

Campaign Results: SUCCESSFUL

Goal: $45,000 | Raised: $48,200 (107% of goal)

With support from 280+ donors, we ensured over 1,200 children started school healthy, equipped, and confident. Many parents shared that without this program, their children would have started school without required immunizations or basic supplies.

Parent Testimonials

“My daughter needed glasses but I couldn’t afford them. Now she can see the board at school. Thank you!” – Maria G., parent

“I lost my job during COVID and couldn’t afford vaccines or school supplies. This program was a blessing to our family.” – James T., parent
